WATER MUST WORK FOR PEOPLE, NOT JUST SHAREHOLDERS.

Cleaner water, fairer bills, stronger accountability.
Thatcher’s 1989 water law took water away from belonging to us and put it in the hands of private profit-makers. Labour is changing that.
The Water Bill will remove caps on public ownership and the restriction on government acquiring shares. It gives government more room to consider future action when water companies let customers and the environment down.
This does not itself take water companies back into public ownership. But it removes a legal barrier and opens the way to stronger public control, alongside reforms to deliver cleaner water, fairer bills and better accountability.
For too long, the public has had too little say over an essential service. Labour is taking on the old rules and setting out a stronger role for the public interest.
