New Community Mural Unveiled at Tees Valley Women’s Centre

Celebrating community stories through local art
The the unveiling of a fantastic new community mural at the Tees Valley Women’s Centre in South Bank. 🎨💜
There is a really special history behind the Centre. It began back in 1987, when a group of women from South Bank started meeting with a shared ambition to improve the lives of women in their community. After years of hard work and fundraising, the South Bank Women’s Centre officially opened in 1991 and has since grown into the Tees Valley Women’s Centre we know today.
More than 35 years later, it remains a grassroots organisation at the heart of the community, providing women with a safe and welcoming place to access education and training, employment support, advice, childcare and opportunities to build confidence and independence.
So it feels particularly fitting that the Centre’s latest chapter has been captured through this beautiful mural, created by local women telling their own stories through art, with the help and guidance of local artist Jess.
I’m really pleased that the project has been supported with funding through the TS6 Together – Pride in Place programme, putting investment directly into projects shaped by the people who live in our communities.
A huge well done to everyone at the Centre, to Jess, and most importantly to all of the women who contributed their stories and creativity.
From a group of South Bank women coming together in 1987, to the incredible community you see today – this is exactly what pride in place is all about. 💜
