Legal e-bikes are welcome. Dangerous, illegally converted bikes are not.
Across Redcar & Cleveland, residents are raising concerns about illegally converted e-bikes being ridden at speed on pavements, around parks and through busy streets. Some conversion kits can turn an ordinary pedal bike into a powerful, unlicensed and uninsured vehicle capable of dangerous speeds.
Legal e-bikes, used safely and responsibly, are not the problem. Anna’s campaign is focused on the illegal kit and high-powered bikes that put pedestrians, children, older residents and other road users at risk.
Three practical steps to keep our streets safe.
Tougher rules to prevent the sale of illegal e-bike conversion kits and high-powered e-bikes that do not meet road safety law.
Clear responsibilities for marketplaces and retailers selling these products.
Back enforcement against dangerous riding while protecting responsible, legal e-bike users.
A legal electrically assisted pedal cycle has strict limits. If an e-bike has been altered to go beyond them, it may be treated in law as a motor vehicle.
